All that I wanted for my birthday this year was to slow down and to spend some quality alone time with my guy. So that little sweetie pie of mine booked us a spa day, complete with a couples massage, a sauna session, and a salt room session.
To be totally transparent here, our initial plan was to go to the big name spa here in Charlotte, but when he called, he was told it was booked out for a few weeks. So instead of postponing, he did some research to find other options here in town. He came across OM Spa… and boy, oh boy, I’m so glad he did. It was such an awesome experience and just what I needed! In retrospect, the other spa would have been way too busy and crowded to qualify for alone time.
When we arrived at this adorable spa, we were greeted with the friendliest faces and the yummiest mimosas. We had to fill out just a tiny bit of paper work and then we were led upstairs to a quiet and relaxing waiting room. We enjoyed our mimosas and then our massage therapists came to greet us. They led us to the massage room where we were given the softest, fluffiest robes my hands have ever touched, and then we talked with our respective therapists about what we wanted out of our massages.
My boyfriend gets massages regularly, but it’s been about eight years since I’ve had one (I know, I know… 2020 is the year of more #selfcare) so my goal was one hundred percent just to relax. Also, I was a little sore from a workout earlier in the week, so I mentioned that to my massage therapist.
OM Spa massages also include aromatherapy – a holistic healing treatment that uses essential oils to promote health and well-being of the body, mind, and spirit. It is said to enhance both physical and emotional health. I think we both ended up choosing bergamot, which is believed to elevate your mood and alleviate stress…v necessary… plus it smells so wonderful.
The massage was freakin’ awesome. I know I was long over-due and don’t have too much to compare it to, but STILL. And even though my boyfriend had a different massage therapist than me, he said it was the best massage he’s ever had (and being someone who goes often, he knows what he’s talking about)!!! While I was teetering on the edge of a snooze, I never fully dozed off, and I’m glad I didn’t miss a second of this experience.
Post massage, we were led to our own personal sauna – the cutest little wooden room, perfect for just the two of us. Saunas are used for natural healing and prevention. The infrared waves are supposed to penetrate deep into your joints, muscles, and tissues to release toxins, improve waste removal, and cellular purification. All of that is part of its anti-aging benefits (…perfect for this newly 32-year-old!).
Another advantage of an infrared sauna is that you can burn up to 600 calories.. while. you. relax. Since your body is working hard to cool itself, your heart rate increases significantly, causing your body to burn more calories. Since our sauna had already been turned on and warmed up for us, it didn’t take long for us to start sweating and burning those calories. Shockingly, we lasted an entire 45 minutes (and if you know us, you know which one of us was struggling with the heat and which one of us was loving it, hehe). Even Dr. Edmiston, the chiropractor behind OM Spa’s whole operation, was surprised we were able to stay in that long. Is this an accomplishment I should now put on my resume???
Our next treatment, halotherapy, was perfectly scheduled after the sauna. Halotherapy is a salt room, kept at a cooler temperature, where medical grade salt is ground to a particular strength/concentration and the fine particles are pumped into the air to kill germs. It helps with sinus and lung health, improves irritated red skin, and accelerates wound healing. Salt is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial and antiviral. The negative ions from the salt are said to help people enhance their moods. Should we all convert our offices into salt rooms now???
OM Spa’s salt room has three lounge chairs, but thankfully no other guests were booked at the same time, so it was just us two. It was nice and quiet, except for a soft humming noise coming the salt grinder. Although we were still wearing our cozy robes, my body was cooling down, I started to feel a chill, so the blankets on each chair were a really nice touch! Between the salt in the air, the quiet hum, the cool temperature, the cozy robe and blanket, and my guy by my side, I seriously don’t think I could have been more relaxed, comfortable, or happy.
Sadly, our halotherapy session came to an end, and that meant our spa day did too. I didn’t want our time to end, but I was so happy from such a wonderful experience. Thankfully, my boyfriend purchased a 3-pack of halotherapy sessions, so we will be back very soon!
If you are in the Charlotte area, I can’t recommend OM Spa enough. They do not only offer massages, saunas, and halotherapy – they provide chiropractor services (not only for your neck and back pain, but also to treat headaches and migraines!) and skin care services like facials, chemical peels, dermaplaning and so much more.
P.S. Girlfriends, we can reserve the entire Spa!Imagine this… just us gals, drinking mimosas, in the zen lounge and spa, the infrared sauna, the salt room, & a massage! COME ONNNNN. Who wants to join me?! <3
